September Pool Tips for Florida: Hurricane Season Prep and the Fall Transition

September is the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season. It is also the month Florida pools start collecting falling leaves and pine needles, when daylight shortens enough that evening swims happen under artificial light, and when the water is still warm enough to keep every summer problem alive.

The single most expensive mistake a Florida pool owner can make happens in this month, and it is one many people make while trying to do the right thing. This guide covers storm preparation that actually protects the pool, the fall debris routine, and the safety equipment inspectors and insurers look for.

Why September is a transitional month, not an easy one

Storm risk peaks. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and activity historically peaks around the second week of September. This is the month a storm is most likely to actually reach your property.

Organic load shifts. Summer debris is mostly pollen, sunscreen and bather waste. September adds leaves, pine needles, seed pods and wind-driven landscaping material, which behave differently in water and cause different problems.

Daylight shortens. Swimming moves later into the evening while the sun sets earlier, which puts real weight on underwater and deck lighting that has probably not been checked since spring.

Use drops, attention drops with it. This is the trap. Fewer swims means fewer glances at the water, and problems get a head start before anyone notices.

1. Prepare for tropical weather, and do not drain the pool

The rule that saves pools: do not fully drain your pool before a storm. It feels like the sensible move, and it is the most expensive mistake in Florida pool ownership.

Florida has a high water table, often only a few feet below the surface. Heavy rain saturates the soil around the pool shell and creates hydrostatic pressure pushing upward. The weight of the water inside the pool is what counteracts that pressure. Remove the water and the shell can crack, shift, or lift out of the ground entirely. The industry term is “popping” a pool, and it is usually a total loss rather than a repair. Vinyl liner pools face the added risk of the liner wrinkling, shrinking or tearing once the supporting water is gone.

The water also acts as a cushion. Debris that lands in a full pool splashes into water rather than hitting bare plaster or tile.

What to do before a storm

  1. Leave the water in. If you are concerned about overflow, lower the level by no more than 1 to 2 feet. Never drain it unless a licensed professional or local authority has specifically instructed you to, based on your pool type and site conditions.
  2. Shut off power at the breaker to the pump, heater, salt system, lighting and automation. This protects the equipment from surges and from running dry.
  3. Secure or remove loose items. Patio furniture, umbrellas, planters, pool toys, cleaning poles and the robotic cleaner all become projectiles in high wind.
  4. Protect the equipment pad. Where practical, disconnect and move sensitive components such as control panels and portable equipment indoors or to higher ground. Wrapping the pump motor in waterproof covering helps against wind-driven rain but does nothing against flooding.
  5. Trim overhanging branches well before the storm, and never trim landscaping directly into the pool.
  6. Photograph the pool and equipment before the storm. Insurance claims move faster with dated before-and-after evidence.

Where the advice genuinely disagrees

Two points are worth knowing because credible Florida sources take opposite positions, and being honest about that is more useful than pretending there is a single answer.

Patio furniture in the pool. The Florida Swimming Pool Association says furniture may be gently placed in the pool if it cannot be stored inside, while cautioning about finish scratches and chemical damage. The University of Florida IFAS Extension advises never doing this. The safe default is to store furniture indoors or in a garage. Use the pool only if you have genuinely no other option and you accept the risk to the finish.

Shocking before the storm. The FSPA suggests adding an extra dose of chlorine ahead of a storm to build a reserve. UF IFAS advises against it. Our practical position is that a heavy pre-storm shock is worth doing when the storm is confirmed and the pool is already well balanced, and is not worth doing as a routine precaution every time a system forms.

After the storm

  1. Do not enter the pool area if there is standing water near electrical equipment. Wait until it is safe or call a professional.
  2. Do not restart a pump motor that has been submerged. Running a flooded motor destroys it. Have it inspected and dried or replaced.
  3. Remove large debris first with a deep leaf net, before it sinks and decomposes. Do this even if you have no power.
  4. Restore power and circulation once the equipment is confirmed safe, then run the filtration continuously until the water clears.
  5. Retest and rebalance everything. Storm water dilutes both your sanitiser and your stabiliser at once.
  6. Still do not drain the pool. The ground is at its most saturated in the days after a storm, which is exactly when the uplift risk is highest.

2. Remove leaves and organic debris daily

Fall debris is not just untidy. It causes three specific problems, and all of them get worse with time in the water.

Staining. Leaves, acorns and seed pods release tannins as they break down. On a light plaster or pebble finish those tannins produce brown stains that can set within a few days. Once the stain has bonded to the surface, removing it needs acid washing or a stain treatment rather than brushing.

Chlorine demand. Every piece of organic matter in the pool consumes sanitiser as it decomposes. A skimmer basket packed with wet leaves is actively burning through your chlorine while also restricting flow.

Nutrient loading. Decomposing plant material releases phosphates and nitrates into the water. Those are algae food, and September water is still warm enough for algae to use them fast.

Skim daily during leaf drop rather than weekly. Empty the skimmer baskets before they are full, not after. If your property has heavy tree cover, a leaf canister fitted inline ahead of the pump saves a great deal of basket emptying, and skimmer socks catch the fine material that slips past the basket.

Pine needles deserve a specific mention. They pass through standard basket mesh, mat together against the filter and are one of the most common causes of restricted flow in Florida pools during autumn.

3. Keep the water chemistry stable through rain dilution

September rainfall does two things at once. It dilutes your free chlorine and your cyanuric acid, and it pushes pH around because rainwater is naturally acidic while heavy runoff carries in whatever is on the surrounding surfaces.

Losing stabiliser is the part people miss. Cyanuric acid protects chlorine from ultraviolet breakdown, and after a month of heavy rain and top-ups the level can drop far enough that your chlorine burns off within hours of sunrise. The symptom looks like a chlorine problem. The cause is a stabiliser problem, and adding more chlorine does not fix it.

Test at least twice a week through September, and always after significant rainfall. Test the full panel monthly, not just chlorine and pH.

4. Inspect pool equipment before you need it

September is the wrong month to discover an equipment problem. Parts availability and technician schedules both tighten sharply the moment a storm is named, and an issue that would be a routine repair in April becomes a two week wait in September.

Walk the equipment pad now and check:

  • The pump. Grinding or screeching means failing bearings. A motor that hesitates on startup is telling you it is close to the end.
  • Unions, valves and the pump seal for drips. Small leaks at the pad are cheap to fix and expensive to ignore.
  • The heater, which sits idle through summer and often fails on the first cool evening when you actually want it.
  • The salt cell for scale on the plates, which quietly reduces chlorine output.
  • The automation panel, particularly whether it holds its schedule after a power interruption. Storm season causes a lot of silent schedule resets.
  • Electrical connections and the GFCI, which matter more in a month of standing water than at any other time of year.
  • Plumbing runs and the equipment pad slab for cracks or settling.

Unexplained water loss beyond normal evaporation deserves a professional leak detection test. Continuous top-ups mask the problem and also keep diluting your chemistry, which is why leak-affected pools are so hard to keep balanced.

5. Clean the filter more often through leaf season

Heavy organic load loads the filter faster than anything else in the year. A filter that held clean pressure for six weeks in spring may need attention every two to three weeks during leaf drop.

The trigger is still pressure, not the calendar. Clean or backwash when the gauge reads 8 to 10 psi above the pressure recorded with a clean filter. What changes in September is how quickly you reach that threshold.

Fine organic material also embeds deeper into cartridge pleats than pollen does, so a rinse alone leaves the cartridge partially blocked while the gauge reads acceptable. A chemical soak at the end of the season restores flow that rinsing cannot. If the pool has been through a storm, expect to clean the filter more than once during the recovery.

Watch for the mismatch signal: chemistry tests fine but the water looks dull. That is almost always a filtration and circulation problem rather than a chemical one.

6. Check your pool lighting before the evenings get dark

This is the tip most people skip, and it is the one with the clearest safety consequence.

By late September, sunset in Florida arrives noticeably earlier, and the pool that was perfectly visible at 7pm in July is now dark. Meanwhile the water is still warm and inviting, so evening swimming continues. Poor visibility around water is a serious risk, and it is a risk that arrives gradually enough that nobody notices the change.

Check three layers:

  • Underwater lighting. Every fixture should illuminate the full bottom of the pool. A main drain grate that cannot be seen clearly at night is both a safety issue and, for public pools, a compliance issue. Look for water intrusion in the fixture, which shows as fogging or condensation inside the lens and needs immediate professional attention.
  • Deck and landscape lighting. Steps, ladders, level changes, the equipment pad path and the gate all need to be visible. Most poolside injuries happen on the deck, not in the water.
  • Electrical safety. Pool lighting circuits must be properly bonded and GFCI protected. Never attempt to change an underwater fixture yourself unless you know exactly what you are doing, and never work on a pool light with the pool in use.

For commercial facilities, Chapter 64E-9 requires underwater and area lighting for night swimming in accordance with the Florida Building Code. If the lighting is not functioning, the pool must be closed at night. This is a common autumn violation precisely because summer daylight hid the problem for months.

September is also a sensible time to consider an LED upgrade. Colour-changing LED fixtures use a fraction of the energy of the older incandescent units and last considerably longer, which matters if the fixture is difficult to access.

Commercial pool owners: the safety equipment audit

Water chemistry gets most of the attention, but safety equipment and signage account for a large share of the violations written against Florida public pools. These items do not degrade visibly. A latch that has loosened over a season, a depth marker worn faint, or a rope that has frayed will all pass a casual look and fail an inspection.

Work through this list before the autumn inspection cycle.

Lifesaving equipment

  • An 18-inch diameter lifesaving ring with enough rope attached to reach every part of the pool. The rope must be in good condition, and the ring must be visible, fully accessible and not tied down or locked.
  • Pools longer than 50 feet require a lifesaving ring along each of the longer sides.
  • A shepherd’s hook on a rigid one-piece pole, securely mounted and accessible.
  • A safety line where the pool floor has a slope break, mounted on cup anchors two feet toward the shallow end of the break, with visible floats. It may only be removed temporarily for lap swimming while a lifeguard or safety attendant is present.

Markings and signage

  • Permanent depth markings in numerals and letters at least 4 inches high on a contrasting background, followed by FEET, FT, INCHES or IN. Deck markers must sit within 3 feet of the water.
  • NO DIVING markings where the pool is not an approved diving area.
  • Posted rules legible from the deck, covering bathing load, hours of operation, no diving, animals, glass, food and beverages, showering, swimming while ill, and swallowing pool water.
  • The current inspection report posted where patrons can see it.

Barriers, drains and access

  • Gates and enclosure doors self-closing and self-latching, and actually latching every time rather than most of the time. Test each one repeatedly, not once.
  • Suction outlet covers and grates secured, intact, and compliant with the federal anti-entrapment standard, with the verification recorded on the required Department of Health form.
  • Gutter grates fully intact, skimmer weirs in place, deck covers secured, baskets present and clean.
  • Night lighting functional, or the pool closed after dark.

Storm season adds one more item. After any significant weather event, re-verify that gates still latch, that grates and covers have not shifted, and that signage has not been damaged or blown away. A storm that leaves the pool itself untouched can easily take out a depth marker or bend a gate.

Residential pool owners: cooler evenings do not mean less maintenance

The most common residential pool failure in Florida is not a dramatic one. It is attention quietly tapering off in September while the water stays warm enough for algae to thrive. A pool that goes three weeks without a proper look during leaf drop can need a full remediation, which costs far more than the service that would have prevented it.

September is also the right month to check your barrier, because storm damage and general wear both accumulate through summer. Screen enclosures, the birdcage structures common across Central Florida, can serve as the barrier where they meet the height and access requirements, but every enclosure door must be self-closing and self-latching. Enclosure doors are where compliance most often slips, because a door that has been propped open all summer or lost its closer is easy to stop noticing.

Test every gate and enclosure door now. Open it fully, let go, and confirm it closes and latches on its own every single time.

Spas, fountains and water features in storm season

Water features take storm damage disproportionately, because their components are smaller, more exposed and more delicate than pool equipment.

Before a storm, shut off power to feature pumps and lighting at the breaker. Remove or secure lightweight decorative elements, finials and loose basin ornaments. Where a spa has a cover, secure it properly rather than simply resting it in place, since an unsecured cover becomes a large sail in high wind.

Small pumps are the vulnerable point. A fountain pump that keeps running while the basin level drops will burn out quickly, and feature pumps rarely have the same dry-run protection as a main pool pump.

After a storm, clear the basin before restoring power. Fine debris drawn into a small feature pump does damage immediately. Check nozzles for blockage and for the mineral scale that Florida’s hard water builds up and that distorts the spray pattern.

Standing water is a mosquito concern. A feature that is switched off after a storm and left with static water in the basin becomes a breeding site within days. Either restore circulation or drain the basin fully.

Spas need their own attention through September. The small water volume means storm dilution and debris hit the chemistry much harder than they hit a pool, and a spa left uncovered through a storm generally needs draining and refilling rather than rebalancing.
